carving pumpkins
Me and You.
Carving pumpkins.
YOU
It’s too early to do this.
ME
What?
YOU
It’s too early to start carving pumpkins.
ME
Why?
YOU
They’re just gonna go bad.
ME
They’re gonna go bad no matter when we carve them.
YOU
I guess.
A pause.
ME
I think,
At the heart of the matter,
People are difficult to work with.
YOU
Excuse me?
ME
It’s just,
At the heart of the matter,
The actual heart of the matter,
People can be really difficult to work with.
They’re sweaty.
They smell.
They look like shit half the time.
Even when they do look good, it’s because they’re putting on make up.
YOU
I’m not sure I follow this.
ME
Well,
It’s just.
Look at zebras?
YOU
Where?
ME
No I mean,
Conceptualize one.
Imagine one.
YOU
A zebra?
ME
Yeah.
Imagine a zebra.
Those are beautiful animals.
And what do they do?
YOU
Nothing?
ME
Exactly. They just wake up and they’re gorgeous.
YOU
That’s the same with some people.
ME
But only a handful.
Most zebras are beautiful from the getgo.
YOU
So what does this have to do with people being difficult to work with.
ME
Well,
If people were all attractive,
Beautiful, let’s say,
Then it wouldn’t be hard to get around their faults.
YOU
Like the sweat.
ME
Or the smell.
If they were beautiful then you could just deal with all of it.
YOU
I forget sometimes that you’re so intelligent.
ME
Is that…
YOU
What?
ME
Nothing.
YOU
Is that what?
ME
Nothing.
YOU
No, what?
Is that what?
ME
Is that sarcasm in your voice.
YOU
No.
ME
Really?
YOU
There was a little bit of sarcasm in my voice yes.
A pause.
Brown and Orange and Red and Yellow leaves cut out of heavy construction paper roll across the stage.
